29: Twist and Shout (Or: CELEBRATE! The Sponsorship Goal Has Been Met!)

Posted on | July 25, 2009 | 3 Comments

Here it is, folks — within the past half hour, the sponsorship goal was met. My original goal was $500. A few days ago, I thought I’d never make it. This morning, I thought I had an outside chance. But now, here we are: $533.42!

THANK YOU SO MUCH, EVERYONE!

It’s time for a little celebratory dance and singalong!

I love Twist and Shout.  A total Beatles classic.  One of the best rock vocals ever, performed by John while he had a cold, and after he’d been recording for 13 hours.  In one take.  As I’m now officially 14 hours into this thing, I think I might even have a little bit of an idea of how he felt!  (Of course, John Lennon got to do his badass one take and go home.  I’ve still got 10 more hours of blogging about him left.)

And have I mentioned how extremely excited I am that this song made it into the Beatles Rock Band game?  After I kept saying I wanted it, and people kept telling me, “no, Cara, they’ll never put a cover in”?  Oh yes, I am excited.  Yes, indeed I am.  (I might have started excitedly and uncontrollably screaming “YES!!  I KNEW IT!!” at  my husband when the trailer started playing.  There is, however, no evidence of this.)

Woohoo CELEBRATION!!! Now you really need to treat yourself. If brownies could travel through the internet, I would bake a batch and send you some.

Actually, believe it or not, he didn’t! There was a second take of “Twist And Shout” attempted, but John’s voice was too far gone.

I think Paul had the most impressive vocal recovery story, though. “Yesterday”, the sweet, heartfelt, intimately-expressed anthem of refret, was recorded after the throat-shredding “I’d Down”. Of course, they’d broken for lunch in between, but still…wow.

(”I’ve Just Seen A Face” was recorded the same day, but earlier.)

Ah, with the technicalities. YES, John Lennon did do a second take, but the second take was not used. Thus, the vocal that you hear on the record was recorded in one take, which was also the first.

Clearly you are a big Beatles fan, though. :)

Speaking of Paul, he likes to brag that he actually did Long Tall Sally in one take with no second take recorded. But I don’t think he had a cold, had just come off tour, and had been recording for 13 hour straight at that point, either :P
